Marshmallow Laser Feast and Heston Blumenthal to Create VR Dining Experience

London based design studio Marshmallow Laser Feast and Michelin starred chef Heston Blumenthal are teaming up to create an immersive dining experience led by virtual reality.

For two decades variants of virtual reality have been described as the technology of tomorrow, but its growing influence on the worlds of music, fashion, video gaming and art is slowly proving that it will soon cultivate the way the general public view and interact with the world today.

One arena virtual reality has not yet successfully navigated is the experience of fine dining, until now. London based design studio Marshmallow Laser Feast have announced that they are to team up with Michelin starred chef Heston Blumenthal to create a mixed-reality dining experience. Though little has been revealed about the project, (including when and where it will take place) Robin McNichols, Marshmallow Laser Feasts Creative Director, has disclosed that real time motion-capture technology, science, puppeteers and sound design will form a fundamental part of the event.

Heston Blumenthal is no stranger to the grandiose and subversive. Though arguably defined by his idiosyncratic appearance, recent projects have seen him attempt to revolutionise food. The collaboration with Marshmellow Laser Feast, a company who’ve applied the discipline of virtual reality to music videos, nightclub experiences and real time animation, makes perfect sense.

Our relationship with food is already multi-sensory, and many restaurants attempt to provide consumers with an immersive experience, making the space ripe for virtual reality.
